One Month Anniversary

Married for one month already. Happy :)

Find and Replace

On Monday afternoon, I went to the Social Security Office downtown to apply for a new card, updated with my married name. According to the government, my last name is now Thomas. (The brand-spanking-new card will be arriving in two weeks. Thank goodness because the original one I received at birth has since begun to decay.)

This was a really hard thing for me to do. I hadn’t really envisioned myself getting married therefore I wasn’t expecting any reason to ever change my name. On the other hand, Gavin had apparently been dreaming his whole life of having a wife and calling her “Mrs. Thomas.” Then again, Gavin probably hadn’t anticipated getting married in a church- or ever getting baptized. (That happened.) Prior to our engagement, I’m pretty sure Gavin thought my church was weekly yoga class.

I’ve heard that marriage is about compromise. And so we did that. Gavin got baptized (for the church wedding) and I changed my last name with the United States government. We both made major leaps outside of our comfort zones, putting our individual stubbornness aside for the simple sake of making the person you love really, really happy.

But for the record, you will not find Gavin praying in church on Sunday morning, just like you won’t find a single person where I work referring to me by my married name. Let’s be real here, people.
